After the main series ended beautifully, many fans thought we wouldn't return to Hawkins again. But Stranger Things: Tales from '85 proves that the world of Stranger Things still has many stories to tell. This time, it comes in an animated format that is both warm and creepy at the same time, taking us back to the winter of 1985 when everything seemed quiet, but reality hides something huge and terrifying.

Plot Summary (No Spoilers)

The story takes place during the winter of 1985, shortly after the events of Season 3. Hawkins seems to have returned to a peaceful town, but then strange events occur when a new species of monster appears, unlike the Demogorgon or Mind Flayer we know. The gang of close friends—Eleven, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Max, and Will—must reunite to solve the mystery of where this creature comes from and what it wants from their town.

What sets this apart from the main series is the expanded perspective on other characters in town, such as adults and other teenagers who play more significant roles, making the story more diverse and complex. Of course, we'll see heartwarming friendship and the kids' bravery again, but this time they face a threat that is closer and more tangible than before.

Performance and Characters

Even though it's animation, the voice acting by the cast is excellent across the board. Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven conveys the character's strength and vulnerability perfectly, while Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max retains the coolness and humor that fans love. Luca Diaz (Mike) and Elisha Williams (Lucas) still have great chemistry, and Braxton Quinney (Dustin) and Benjamin Plessala (Will) complete the team beautifully.

Interestingly, animation allows characters to express a wider range of emotions through exaggerated movements and facial expressions, making dramatic or comedic scenes more powerful. New characters introduced are charming and don't feel extraneous, helping to expand the world of Hawkins.

Direction, Visuals, and Music

Visually, Stranger Things: Tales from '85 adopts an animation style inspired by 80s animated films, much like the main series references movies from that era. Colors are vibrant but with dark tones in horror scenes. Character and environment designs are detailed and lively, making it a visual treat.

The score is once again provided by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of the band Survive, creating the atmosphere. The signature synth sound remains, but it's adapted to the story's mood, whether in thrilling or heartwarming scenes. The soundtrack continues to be one of the series' strengths, giving it a unique charm.

Editorial Analysis

Stranger Things: Tales from '85 is not just a bonus or a spin-off; it's a quality work in its own right. The series fully retains the spirit of the original—mystery, friendship, and 80s nostalgia—but also dares to add new elements, especially by expanding the universe through diverse character perspectives.

The strength lies in the intense and fast-paced storytelling compared to the main series, avoiding dragging. At the same time, it still devotes time to character relationship development. However, some episodes may provide too little detail about the mystery, which might confuse those unfamiliar with the universe. But overall, it's a series that both old fans and newcomers can enjoy.

Verdict

If you are a die-hard fan of the Stranger Things universe, this series is a must-watch because it delivers both nostalgia and new excitement in a balanced way. Or if you are someone who enjoys high-quality animation with a mysterious and complex plot, Stranger Things: Tales from '85 is another worthwhile choice to watch.
